also has a maritime investigation and tracing unit which includes police divers. The members of this unit are on board all helicopters performing maritime surveillance flights as investigating officers. The Department Sea in Neustadt focuses on all basic, tactical, logistical and technical issues required for maritime service. Providing specialised advice and support to the Federal Police HQ in Potsdam on all maritime topics is an important function of the Department Sea. This includes anti-piracy measures, working with national und European authorities and providing support for training in other states. Contributing on a senior and expert level in official agencies, forums and working groups on maritime topics, especially in a European context, has a high priority for the Federal Police Department for Maritime Security. The School and Training Centre for Maritime Policing (MaST) of the Federal Police in Neustadt has become a recognised institution not only in Germany. It regularly and increasingly hosts seminars, trainings and workshops for foreign partner organisations. CROSS-BORDER COLLABORATION For many years the Federal Police Sea has been co-operating very closely and trustfully with the maritime border protection authorities of the neighbour states based on bilateral police agreements. A new quality of co-operation with the foreign partners was achieved by regular joint patrols of the Baltic and North Sea. These joint patrols first started with the Polish Sea Border Protection force and later extended to the Dutch Royal Maarechausse. The joint patrols take place on ships of the Federal Police Sea and of the Polish and Dutch partners. This is a beneficial experience and is constantly used to further develop the joint performance of functions. With this very farreaching form of cooperation the Federal Police Sea has explored eine wichtige Funktion für den Direktionsbereich See. A new quality of co-operation with the foreign partners was achieved by regular joint patrols of the Baltic and North Sea.« © Bundespolizei griephan global security 2/2010 17
