griephan global security 2/2010 7 Next generation ships Goods BAE Systems has been awarded a four year £127m contract by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) to take forward the programme to develop a new generation of combat ships for the Royal Navy. The announcement comes as the Royal Navy has revealed that the first ships to be developed under the Future Surface Combatant programme will be known as the Type 26 class. Designed to replace the existing Type 22 and Type 23 frigates, Type 26 will deliver a versatile, affordable capability that can be easily upgraded to ensure it remains at the cutting-edge throughout its service life. Under the contract, BAE Systems will work in a joint team with the MOD to assess options from the initial concept design in order to develop a detailed specification ready for manufacture. www.baesystems.com New Sprinter GoodsThe Germanministry of the interior is adding over 1,200MercedesBenz Sprinters to its fleet. The first vehicles were officially handed over at GPEC 2010 in Leipzig, all other vehicles will be delivered to customers within the next two years. Mercedes-Benz garnered the contract after a Europewide tender for a total of 1,233 vans of all kinds. The Mercedes-Benz vans are used both by the national police force, the Federal Agency for Technical Relief and by the riot police squads of the federal states. The Sprinter meets the most demanding technical standards and is the ideal platform for all kinds of trailers and add-ons. Its diesel engine is very environment-friendly and very economical thanks to its significantly reduced fuel consumption. Obstacle warning system Goods EADS Defence & Security (DS) has been ordered to equip three additional helicopters of the Royal Thai Air Force with its obstacle warning system. This device, which is known as ‘HELLAS’ (Helicopter Laser Radar), ensures the detection of obstacles that are virtually invisible for pilots, such as high-voltage power lines, thus enabling missions to be carried out even under difficult visibility conditions. Before this, in 2005, Defence Electronics, an integrated activity of DS, already delivered three obstacle warning systems to the Royal Thai Air Force, which have been integrated into Bell 412 helicopters. Die ersten Fahrzeuge wurden auf der GPEC 2010 in Leipzig offiziell übergeben,alle weiteren Fahrzeuge werden in den nächsten zwei Jahren an den Kunden ausgeliefert. Die Entscheidung für Mercedes-Benz fiel im Rahmen einer europaweiten Ausschreibung für insgesamt 1.233 Transporter in unterschiedlichen Ausführungen. Zum Einsatz kommen die Sprinter von Mercedes-Benz sowohl bei der Bundespolizei, beim Technischen Hilfswerk als auch bei den Bereitschaftspolizeien der Länder. Die Transporter haben höchsten technischen Standard und bilden eine ideale Plattform für Auf- und Ausbauten aller Art.
