RTR 4/2010 43 would obviously be impossible to present everything new that was exhibited at InnoTrans 2010. What follows is no more than a concise selection. 2 Rail vehicles and traction equipment Alstom was the only manufacturer present in Berlin to exhibit a tilting train. This was the Pendolino ETR 610, which had been ordered by Cisalpino and is already in service with the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and Trenitalia (Fig. 3). The Alstom group also showed a Coradia Continental für Agilis, manufactured in Salzgitter. Alstom’s stand further featured a new DT 5 unit for the Hamburg U-Bahn, a project Alstom has been pursuing jointly with Bombardier. The locomotives exhibited by Alstom included a prototype of the four-system Prima-II freighttrain locomotive. Once again, Bombardier made the journey to Berlin with a big selection of vehicles. The central attraction amongst these was the mockup of the Zefiro 380 high-speed train (Fig. 4). With this train, which is to enter service first of all in China, Bombardier has succeeded in entering the market for ultra-fast trains. The ALP-45DP locomotive, which Bombardier also had on display, is being manufactured for the North-American This was the eighth occasion for the specialist trade fair to be held on Berlin’s exhibition site, the “Messegelände am Funkturm”, from 21 to 24 September 2010, and 2242 exhibitors set out their stands on the 81000 m2 of space available for the event. More than half the exhibitors came from countries other than Germany. The exhibition railway tracks within the trade-fair grounds constitute an important feature of InnoTrans, and 121 railway vehicles (more than ever before) were on display over a total length of 3500 m of track. The operators of the site, Berlin Messe GmbH, counted 106 612 trade visitors, 20% more than in 2008. Once again, more than 50% of these were from outside of Germany – from 110 different countries, to be precise. The next InnoTrans is to be held from 18 to 21 September 2012. 1.Opening ceremony and congresses At the opening plenary session, the European Union’s commissioner responsible for transport, Siim Kallas, presented his vision for a pan-European railway network in 2050 (Fig. 1). He stated quite clearly that the railways were indispensible for the competitiveness of European business. The members of the panel for the discussion that followed included Dr. Peter Ramsauer, the German Federal Minister of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs, Dr. Rüdiger Grube, chairman of the board of Deutsche Bahn AG, and Jürgen Fenske, president of the VDV (the association of German transport companies), along with a number of other participants. The “European and Asian Rail Summit”, organised by Deutsche Bahn AG of Berlin, was a get-together for representatives of railways and governments. The topics debated included coordinating the expansion of the infrastructure and a balanced legal system. Dr. Grube expressed his hope that this gathering would become a “World Rail Summit” in 2012. The other formal events included, firstly, the “Dialogue Forum” in the Palais am Funkturm, organised by various representative bodies, the VDV (the association of German transport companies), the German Transport Forum, UNIFE (the union of European railway-supply industries) and VDB (the trade association of the railwaysupply industry in Germany), secondly, the “International Tunnel Forum” and, thirdly, a forum dedicated to local public transport. With more than 2200 exhibitors (including DVV Eurailpress, as usual, see Fig. 2), it InnoTrans – Even more railway than ever before! This year’s InnoTrans specialist railway trade fair in Berlin was even more extensive than it had ever been before.
