RTR 4/2010 37 Fast, wireless communication along the whole length of trains „ R-SMA sockets (BAT300-Rail), and the LAN ports (10/100 BASE-TX) are connected up using the M12 system (BAT300-F) or the RJ45 system (BAT300-Rail), which support Power over Ethernet (PoE) in accordance with IEEE802.3af. A V.24 serial interface is also provided. The voltage is supplied with adequate redundancy from two 24-volt DC connections and one 48-volt DC PoE connection (BAT300-F) or, alternatively, from two 24-volt DC connections, two 48-volt DC PoE connections and one 12-volt DC connection (BAT300-Rail). With an integrated IP router, it is possible to form up to eight sub-networks, each of which can be assigned to the ports and/ or the interfaces of the access points or access clients. It is also possible to connect up both analogue and DSL modems for functions such as WAN routing or remote maintenance. Management can be routed via a web interface, Telnet, TFTP, FTP or SNMP V2. The redundancy procedures, Rapid Spanning Tree and VRRP, ensure high network availability. The quality-of-service functions in accordance with IEEE 802.11e make sure, inter alia, that priority is accorded to voice or video streams. Both the BAT300-Rail and the BAT300-F support all the standardised encryption and authentication procedures in accordance with IEEE 802.11i and 802.1x/EAP as well as WEP, WPA, WPA2, TKIP and AES. With LEPS, it is possible to make WPA2 with PSK even more secure. The available facilities further include WLAN port and protocol filters as well as a radius server and a firewall with intrusion detection. Rogue AP detection is also available via background scanning and WLANmonitor. With its Hirschmann BAT family of WLAN access points and access clients, Belden offers a comprehensive product programme for the wireless transmission of data that has been designed especially for indoor and outdoor applications in industrial environments. There are even two versions (the BAT54-FX2 and the BAT 300-FX2) that are suitable for use in potentially explosive environments. All BAT devices are supplied in a robust metal housing, are suitable for use within a wide range of temperatures and have M12 sockets and high protection classes. Since they also have two WLAN interfaces, they are capable of operating simultaneously in the 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz bands. In addition to all this, particularly stable antennas are also available and these also support the MIMO technology used in the new IEEE802.11n standard, without which it is impossible to attain high distances at meaningful data rates. 4 Conclusions The use of Ethernet communications in trains opens up numerous opportunities for improving safety, security, comfort, convenience and customers’ acceptance of the railway. It is also possible to retrofit existing trains without needing to reconsider their cabling and possibly having to adapt it. This could mean an enormous cost and time benefit when retrofitting and/or redesigning trains. The combination of a hard-wired Ethernet network with the corresponding wireless one also offers an elegant solution to one of the central problems in creating networks in trains, namely the couplings between coaches. The use of robust hardware and management software suitable for deployment in industrial environments does, however, constitute a precondition for a long service life and a dependable operation.
