290 EngineeringRail Power Supply 118 (2020) Heft 7-8 DC railway lines for 35 million people in the Tokyo megalopolis Takeshi Konishi, Tetsuo Uzuka, Hiroaki Morimoto, Tokyo (JP) In Japan DC 1,5kV rail power systems have supported the greater Tokyo megalopolis area with more than 35million people. Recent years, construction phase almost finished. DC fed lines go towards more friendly to the environment while saving energy, simplification of equipment, and low maintenance. Special technologies were installed. 1 Introduction As of 1904, before the Second World War, JNR (former Japanese National Railways) and many private railway operation companies had about 6000 km of electrified lines. After the world war one, JNR began to electrify all trunk lines and commuter lines around big cities. Also several private railway companies enhanced their network to bring large capacity of commuters from suburban areas to the city heart. As of 2019, Japanese commuter lines of JR group (Japanese Railways) and other railway companies in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya area, the trunk line from Tokyo to Osaka and other lines use DC 1,5 kV on a total length of 10878 km with 40000 EMU cars and 2700 rectifiers in 1500 substations along the line. In the greater Tokyo area, daily railway transportation exceeds 55million trips. Figure 1 gives an overview and impression of all railway lines in the Tokyo megalopolis with 35 million people. Recent years, construction phase almost finished in Japan. DC fed rails go towards more friendly to the environment while saving energy. From the 1970s until now, regenerative braking energy from rolling stocks using power electronics and light weight body with new materials are the keywords. Now most of DC fed rolling stocks use IGBTs or GTOs in converters to generate regenerate energy. A stainless steel bodies or aluminum bodies realise light weight. Latest ones have adopted silicon carbide (SiC) new-age semiconductors with more efficiency up to 20% gain. Fixed installed energy storage systems are another wave of technology in recent years.
